DEVELOPMENT, PROMOTION AND PROTECTION
The Development, Promotion and Protection of the Buddhasasana service of the Department of Buddhist Affairs is dedicated to safeguarding the integrity, continuity, and vitality of Buddhism in Sri Lanka through both spiritual and administrative initiatives. This service focuses on preserving the purity of the Buddhist doctrine (Dhamma) and discipline (Vinaya), while fostering the growth of Buddhist education, practice, and community engagement at local and national levels. It includes activities such as supporting the Sangha in their religious duties, organizing national and international Buddhist events, promoting the observance of sacred days and festivals, and facilitating missionary and cultural programs that spread Buddhist values among the public. The Department also works to protect Buddhist sites, institutions, and the rights of monks and devotees, ensuring that all religious activities are conducted in accordance with the laws and traditions of the Buddhasasana. In collaboration with temples, Dhamma Schools, and international Buddhist organizations, this service promotes ethical living, social harmony, and interfaith understanding. Through these ongoing efforts, the Department plays a vital role in upholding Sri Lanka’s heritage as a center of Theravāda Buddhism and ensuring that the teachings of the Buddha continue to guide and inspire future generations.
